    • *** The Georgian Room at the Fairmount Olympic Hotel, 411 University St. (M-F 6:30-2:30pm, Sa-Su 7am-2:30pm, Tu-Sa 5:30-10, $$$) --- Atmosphere is redolent of the great New Orleans restaurants, probably because they both strive to copy the same parents: elegant European places with armies of waitstaff, high ceilings and uncrowded, unhurried dining. We have only been for dessert, which is roughly the same price as other, less expensive downtown destinations (e.g., Cafe Campagne, Andaluca, Il Bistro), and just as good if not better. If you're intimidated, you can always get different but I assume similarly excellent dessert and drinks at the Terrace Bar (to the left as you approach the restaurant). I am eager to try dinner, but, given the prices ($30-$40 entrees), it will have to wait for a very special occasion.

Great for an impromptu picnic at Woodland Park, particularly after a harried day shopping on Aurora. My only gripe is their parking lot. [November 2006]

    • *** Tutta Bella Neapolitan Pizzeria, 4911 Stone Way N --- authentic Neapolitan pizza, plus salads. The pizzas are individual, so everyone can order what they want. And despite the fact that they are a member of some 'slow food' group, the pizza crusts are constantly being made (you can watch them do it) and it only takes 90 seconds in their wood-burning oven, so it's perfect if you have kids: the pizzas are ready in about 3 minutes. No dramatic improvements, but they have been holding steady and making small improvements in the last few years, especially in prices; now what seemed overpriced seems pretty fairly priced, the layout has improved, and they actually have a pretty awesome kids menu with lots of choices beyond mac and cheese and cheeseburgers, at different price points. Sonrisa and Zao are still better bets inside the mall, with Krua an even better choice a few blocks away, but for certain circumstances (you want a steak, you want to watch a game), the RAM works well.     • Sand Point Grill --- There are a number of these types of restaurants all over Seattle: upscale taverns that offer good, interesting gourmet food for about $15 an entree. They generally fall into two classes: worth driving to (see the Maple Leaf Grill, above), and worth walking to. The Sand Point Grill is in the latter class, as is Bick's Broadview Grill. I can walk to Sand Point, but not Broadview, so Sand Point gets listed and Bick's does not. At both Sand Point and Bick's, the food is good, but does not seem worth the prices I need to pay to fill me up. [July 2000]

    • *** Sonrisa, University Village Mall --- Approximately one year after they opened, Sonrisa is still hanging on and has, in fact, gotten better. With happy hours and other specials, you can actually eat here without breaking the bank, and they still run the gamut from non-challenging kid menu food to the chef's fancy, with a full bar in case you want a drink. How do they do it? Well, they're owned by the same people who run the RAM, so they have a buffer against UVillage's drive toward either bankruptcy or banality.
      Speaking of the RAM, it's gotten better, so now with these two and Zao, you have a few places worth eating in UVillage. [December 2008]

If you find yourself hungry here, go to Zao, Sonrisa or perhaps the RAM, get something from QFC, or better yet, go up 25th to eat at Nasai Teriyaki or Krua. [December 2001]

Plus, there are splashes of train decor around, a whole lot of cement mixers parked across the street, and the usual Italian restaurant amenities (such as free bread), which helped distract our kid. As for the food, I screwed up and ordered an entree with a sweet sauce (bleh), but I'm willing to try it again. [April 2002]
