notes and explanation
Tried and liked
- France
- Paris
- *** A la Banane Ivoirienne, 10 rue de la Forge-Royale (Tu-Sa 7-12)
[February 1994] {Let's Go France 1993}
- ***
Astier
(closed Sa-Su) --- very good, love the cheese [February 1994]
- *** Au Petit Ramoneur, 74 rue St. Denis (closed weekends)
--- good people, so-so dessert, good main course.
[February 1994] {Let's Go France 1993}
-
Berthillon
--- ice cream [1993]
- Chez Léon de Bruxelles, numerous locations (we went to the one
on the west side of Place de la Bastille)
--- a local chain that serves large plates of mussels
[February 1994] {Berkeley Guide to France 1994}
- Cosi, 54 rue de Seine --- sandwiches for a good price
[February 1994] {Let's Go France 1993}
- Le Petit Vatel, 5 rue Lobineau --- good food, but get two vegetables
[February 1994] {Let's Go France 1993}
-
Polidor
--- appetizer best, desserts next [February 1994]
- Strasbourg
- *** Pizzaria Aldo, --- design your own pizza, salad, or pasta,
using checklists. If you have a small French food
vocabulary, best to bring along a key of the French words for
various vegetables, meats, and fruits, unless they've translated
their lists since I went. It is the city of the European parliament,
after all, but I can't see that crowd eating here very often.
[1994] {Let's Go France 1993}
- Germany
- Berlin
- *** India Palace, Leibnizstr 35 ---
Eating Indian (or Thai, or Chinese, or ...) in Germany is rather
foolhardy and nearly always disappointing. But having lived in
the country for over a year at the time, and it being Berlin,
I was willing to take a chance.
We asked the waiter when we ordered that the cooks
spice the meal like they would for themselves, not for Germans.
This apparently worked very well; not only was the food quite good to
our palates, but the waiter said the cooks were pleased to be able to
fulfill the request.
[fall 1993] {Real Guide to Europe}
- Great Britain
- London
- *** Stick and Bowl, 31 Kensington High St. [1994]
{Let's Go Britain 1993}
- Hungary
- Budapest
- Bohémtanya Vendéglö, V Kecskeméti 4 ---
At least I think this was the place we
went on our first day, with the tasty paprika-drenched cutlet and
fresh sour cream. [fall 1993] {Berkeley Guide to Eastern Europe 1994}
- *** Ruszwurm, I Szentháromság u. 7 --- great pastries,
can be very crowded. [spring 1994] {Let's Go Europe 1994}
- Tabáni Kakas Vendéglö, I Attila u. 27 [fall 1993]
{Berkeley Guide to Eastern Europe 1994}
- Italy
- Rome
- Insalata Ricca 2, p. Pasquino 73 --- If your search for good, cheap
food leaves you eating too many one-person pizzas, go here and order
the eponymous salad. I having a sneaking suspicion the
original Insalata Ricca is awfully similar, but I haven't been.
[spring 1993] {Let's Go Rome 1993}
- The Netherlands
- Amsterdam
- The Pancake Bakery, Prinsengracht 191 [fall 1993] {Let's Go Europe 1994}
- Poland
- Krakow
- *** Panie Stasi, Ul. Mikołajska 16 (through the archway, into the
back courtyard) --- hard to find, only serves tasty dumplings,
one of the most authentic Eastern European meals we had.
Because it's cheap, there are
students all over, who really helped us figure out what was going on.
Main drawback is that it probably doesn't exist anymore.
[fall 1994] {Berkeley Guide to Eastern Europe 1994}
- Spain
- Barcelona
- *** El Gallo Kirko, C Avinyó 19 ---
Good Pakistani food at a good price.
We mentioned after the meal that it could
have been hotter, and the owner went back and chewed out the cook.
Just part of our quixotic quest for authentic Asian food in Europe.
[spring 1996] {Let's Go Spain 1996}
- Nov Celler, C. Princesa 16 [spring 1996] {Let's Go Spain 1996}
- Restaurante Bidasou, C. Serra 21 [spring 1996] {Let's Go Spain 1996}
- Restaurante Milena, Vía Laietana 6 [spring 1996]
{Let's Go Spain 1996}
- *** Restaurante Riera, C. Joaquín Costa 30 ---
single-serving paella lunches (among others) for a good price
[spring 1996] {Let's Go Spain 1996}
- Restaurante Self-Naturista, C. Santa Ana 11-15 [spring 1996]
{Let's Go Spain 1996}
- Madrid
- Museo del Jamon, C. San Jerónimo 17 ---
A good place for breakfast if you stay in
a hotel near Sol. (If you don't stay in a hotel near Sol, you're
probably paying too much money.) And, of course, you can pick up
some ham for a picnic lunch. [spring 1996] {Let's Go Spain 1996}
- Restaurante Puebla, C. Ventura de la Vega 12 [spring 1996]
{Fodor's Spain}
- *** Restaurante Zara, C. Infantes 5 --- the place that inspired
Elizabeth's love of Cuban food. [spring 1996] {Let's Go Spain 1996}
- *** tapas near Plaza Santa Ana --- If you fly me to Madrid, I
can probably find the places we tried, but I think your money is
better spent experimenting on your own. If you're confused as to what
to do, 'No comprendo el restaurante' is a
good ice-breaker [spring 1996]
